4 x 285s sounds cool in theory, but I'd take 3 or 4 5870s over it any day...for less money...and like a third of the power draw...

In layman's terms it allows you to game across 3 (or with the upcoming cards, six) screens. Technically what it does is configure the graphics cards to see the monitors as one big monitor rather than separate units, then (in games that let you set custom resolutions) it configures the game to run at a resolution equal to the single massive monitor.
