Author Topic: q6600 overclock for gta IV  (Read 5309 times)

i'm currently playing gta IV on my desktop with these specs:
q6600(no OC & stock cooler)
750i sli ftw
8gb ddr2 ram
gtx 260/192
and my OS is windows 7

i've read somewhere that gta IV can gain much fps if you overclock, so i tried putting my q6600 to 2.80ghz and it seemed to run fine with normal temps, before i started gta, around 40-45 celcius.
when i started a new game it ran fine for about 20 seconds and then i got a BSOD Sad
i googled it and learned that i needed to raise the cpu voltage and also change something with the ram...

could anyone explain how to do this? i dont want to spend any money on extra cooling, so please don't advice me to get watercooling etc.

I'm not an overclocking expert but the CPU voltage is raised within the BIOS, dunno about the RAM thing though

Are you doing this in the BIOS? If not you should, there are a lot of settings you need to change to get a good overclock.

Where exactly the option is depends on your motherboard, but somewhere in the BIOS there should be an option regarding CPU voltage. Raise that number. Bare in mind, however, that raising the voltage also increases the CPU's heat a lot more than changing the clocks. On stock cooling I wouldn't recommend more than 1.3-1.35 volts. Also, if you plan to OC above 3.0GHz you will need an aftermarket cooler. At the moment the best price-performance cooler is the CM Hyper 212 PLUS. It's 30 bucks with free shipping at Amazon.

yes, i'm doing it all in the bios, since it the only place i have ever done overclocking before

thx for the tips, i'll try it when i get back at my desktop.
i dont wanna go over 2.8ghz cuz it seemed that it had allready given a great boost to gta and i wont be needing the extra cpu speed for anything else

You can hit 3.0ghz fairly easy with a bit of volt tweaks, say push it up the Vcore to about 1.3, and pump the FSB.

Also, your RAM is essential, so what speed is it?

kingston hyperx 400mhz ddr2 800 (dunno what this means but i hope it helps...)

EDIT: vcore is about 1.1V to 1.2V

That should be fine, especially if you only aim for 2.8...though I really suggest you go for 3. It's where I've got mine and it was so easy to get to.

so basicly all i have to do is raise vcore a little and then set it to 2.8?

EDIT: cpu temps go from aprox. 37-46 celcius

Well, 311, but basically...or you could try out 333 (hint, hint).

ok, i've set it to 311 (2.80ghz) and i raised vcore, although i was confused cuz there was a core voltage and a fsb voltage, but it seems to be running stable(temps are from 43-52 celcius).
I'm going to run gta IV now and see if i get a BSOD(hopefully not)

EDIT: it all runs like a dream and not a single BSOD
all the temps seem fine and just barely make it over 60 celcius, so i might just try 3.00ghz, but i'm not sure since i dont wanna kill my pc if something happens... oh, and thanks to all who helped

Are the seperate cores going around 60 or is the CPU itself going at that temp?

realtemp 3.00 only shows my the individual cores temp, but arent the core temps and the cpu temps the same???

i think the core temp is what matters, but tbh i don't see why you can't push it to 3.0Ghz, you should be about to do it without any voltage increase

you thinks so? i only set the vcore to 1.25, but i guess i could try going to 1.30 and then set fsb to 333.
i really hope i will see some better results in gta IV with 3ghz than with 2.80ghz.
