New Build Problem

I've just built my first custom pc. I ran into an issue on the first time i tried turning it on. It didn't POST. I think this is due to the motherboard being a AM2+ motherboard and the CPU being AM3 but ASUS say that with a BIOS update the CPU should be supported. Does this mean I will have to purchase a cheap old Sempron from ebay? Am I correct that it is the CPU or have I damaged something during the build?

Specs:
Asus M3N78-EM AM2+ Motherboard
AMD Athlon X2 245 (AM3) CPU
2x1GB Corsair XMS2 Memory (DDR2)
Spire Fourier IV CPU Cooler
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Hmm...good point.

Guess I was too distreacted by a movie to realize what you posted.

I guess you have 2 options, return mobo and get a new one.

Or Get a temp. CPU.

I did anticpate this but I thought it might at least let me into bios saying undidentified cpus. I can probably get a cheap sempron for like £2 from ebay. Im just wanting to make sure that that is the problem. What else could it be?

Just get the Sempron, if there is any other problem you won't find out until you get a supported CPU on that board.

Ok guys thanks for the advice! Im trying to find someone with an old Pc with an AM2 socket so I can salvage. I don't want to be sending the motherboard back.

One problem guys. Asus say if there is no beep it is not CPU and it is the motherboard. I will try taking it ourt of the case and firing it up outside of the case because I might be shorting something. Not sure. If that fails I'll get the sempron. And if that fails i'll try and return the mobo.I really don't want to do that so fingers crossed.

Here is another thing to note, When I first fired it up for the very first time it went on for a couple of seconds and turned off and now it stays on with no post and the power button doesn't do anything. Maybe CPU cooler?

if its like that its most probably the cpu cooler....did u apply thermal glue? is the cpu heatsink seated properly?

It wouldn't be the CPU cooler...

Ye I had to reseat the heatsink a couple of times after using the wrong screws etc. When I try it out of the case i'll throw on the stock cooler with the stock bracket and see how that fairs.

Update: I tried the stock cooler... no luck

I'll give you a better description of what is happening.

When I throw in some memory and the AM3 CPU in the AM2+ socket the fans go for a brief moment and turn off again. If I press the power again it does the same and I can keep on trying. There are no beeps. BTW this is with nothing in the mobo apart from cpu, memory, cpu power, motherboard power and the front panel connectors. I'm gonna try get an AM2 Sempron from ebay and if that fails i'll have to purchase another motherboard and maybe try and return this one.

are you witnessing the fan stopping? CPU fans on startup always hit full speed then lower to a quiet speed according to the CPU temp

Yes, all the fans stop. I can keep trying to turn it on but the same thing happens over and over again.
